It acts as an engine lubrication control valve seal ring, forming a tight, oil-resistant seal between the valve's spool and valve body. This seal ensures the valve can accurately regulate the flow of engine lubricating oil, maintaining the optimal oil pressure and volume for engine moving parts such as bearings and gears, avoiding oil leakage that would cause insufficient lubrication, increased friction and wear of engine components, or engine overheating and potential in-flight failure.
